What is it?

UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is India's most competitive recruitment exam, conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission to select officers for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and other Group A services. The exam has three stages: Prelims (objective), Mains (descriptive), and Personality Test (interview). The 2026 notification typically appears in February.

  • Attempts: General 6, OBC 9, SC/ST unlimited (within age limit), EWS 6
  • Age relaxation: OBC +3 years, SC/ST +5, PwBD +10, ex-servicemen per rules
  • Defence Service Personnel disabled in operations: extra relaxation
  • Medical fitness for select services (IPS — vision and physical standards)

How to apply — step by step

  1. Visit upsc.gov.in when CSE 2026 notification opens (Feb 2026)
  2. Register on UPSC Online (One-Time Registration) if not already

  4. Pay fee ₹100 (free for women, SC/ST, PwBD); appear in Prelims (GS + CSAT)
  5. Qualifiers fill DAF-1 and write Mains (9 papers); clear cut-off
