What is it?

National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a one-stop online platform for students to apply for central and state scholarships from Ministry of Minority Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Department of Higher Education, and select state governments. It hosts schemes like Pre-Matric, Post-Matric, Merit-cum-Means, Top Class Education, AICTE Pragati, AICTE Saksham and many more.

Benefits

Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to student's Aadhaar-linked bank account. One application can be considered for multiple eligible schemes. Transparent tracking and auto-renewal feature for many schemes. Saves time by avoiding multiple applications across portals.

Eligibility criteria

  • Indian citizen studying in a recognised institution in India
  • Pre-Matric (Class 1–10) and Post-Matric (Class 11 onwards) schemes have different rules
  • Income limit varies by scheme: typically ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh for minority/SC/ST schemes; up to ₹8 lakh for some merit-based
  • Caste/category eligibility as defined by each scheme (SC/ST/OBC/Minority/General-EWS)
  • Aadhaar-linked bank account in student's name (or parent for very young)
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification
  • Not availing any other central scholarship (some schemes allow combination)

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card of student
  • Aadhaar-linked bank account passbook copy
  • Latest fee receipt from current institution
  • Previous year passing marksheet
  • Income certificate (from competent authority, not older than 1 year usually)
  • Caste / community certificate (if applicable)
  • Bona fide certificate from current institution

How to apply — step by step

  1. Go to scholarships.gov.in and click 'New Registration'
  2. Verify mobile via OTP, generate Application ID and password
  3. Log in, complete Student Profile (educational, family, bank details)
  4. Browse 'Apply for Scholarship' and pick the scheme that matches your category/class
  5. Fill scheme form, upload documents and submit
  6. Forward to institution for verification — they forward to district/state nodal for final approval

Important dates

NSP 2026–27 fresh application window typically opens July–August 2026 and runs till October–November depending on scheme. Institution verification takes additional 30–45 days. Always check scheme-wise last date on the dashboard after login.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Inactive Aadhaar-linked bank or seeding failure — DBT will not work
  • Income certificate older than one year — most schemes reject it
  • Not following the right scheme code for your category/class
  • Skipping institution verification — application gets auto-rejected
  • Mismatch in name on Aadhaar, marksheet and bank account

Frequently asked questions

Is NSP free to use?

Yes. Registration and application on scholarships.gov.in is completely free. Never pay any fee or commission to apply.

Can a general category student apply on NSP?

Yes for some schemes like Central Sector Scholarship for College and University Students (merit-based), but most NSP schemes target SC/ST/OBC/Minority/EWS students.

How long does NSP take to credit money?

Typically 2 to 5 months after institution verification, depending on scheme funding cycle. Track using the application ID after login.

Can I edit my NSP form after submission?

Limited editing is possible during the 'Defective Verification' window. After final verification, edits are not allowed for that cycle.

What if Aadhaar is not linked to my bank?

Link it at your bank branch with passbook and Aadhaar, then check NPCI mapping status — only Aadhaar-seeded accounts receive DBT.
